From 29 October to 2 November 2025, the global rounds of the prestigious student competition, the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (FDI Moot 2025), took place at the University of Suffolk in Boston, USA.
The team from Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU), with the overarching support of EPAM Law Firm, was one of 50 teams representing universities from around the world in the United States. Anastasia Alexandrova, Junior Associate in the International Arbitration and Litigation Practice of EPAM Law, served as the team’s coach.
The FDI Moot simulates the process of international investment arbitration, where students argue the positions of the parties in a fictional dispute between a foreign investor and the host state.
The 2025 case centered on investments in the pharmaceutical industry, cybersecurity issues, and the protection of commercial secrets of the foreign investor. The investor alleged violations of the standards of full protection and security, as well as the principle of free movement of capital. The case also raised questions related to the succession rights of a new independent state.
The SPbU team successfully competed against university teams from India, China, Uzbekistan, and Cambodia. During the preparation phase, they participated in training sessions with teams from MGIMO University, as well as from universities in Serbia, India, China, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Chile, and Italy.
