Vera Rikhterman specialises in representing the interests of domestic and foreign companies in litigations in arbitrazh courts and general-jurisdiction courts of all levels, particularly in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. Vera focuses on corporate disputes, contractual disputes, and has an extensive experience in legal counseling in bankruptcy proceedings.

Vera’s experience covers acting for clients in complex multi-jurisdictional legal proceedings, involving foreign parties, issuing opinions on the Russian law, as well as acting in arbitration proceedings and counselling on enforcement of judgments.

Vera has been engaged in most complicated matters in bankruptcy and dispute resolution and has litigated in over 20 Russian regions, as well as abroad.

Ms Rikterman’s clients are world’s largest ammonia producer TogliattiAzot, Kazakstan major bank BTA Bank, Baltic’s leading distressed asset management company Reverta, Russian geology holding Rosgeologia among others.

Her most significant recent projects include the following ones:

  • Defending Transammiak in a high-profile dispute over an ammonia leakage at the Voronezh parcel of world-largest ammonia pipeline Togliatti-Odessa. The Firm has managed to reduce the overall amount of financial claims against the company from RUB 869m to RUB 1.3m.
  • Acting for receivers appointed by a foreign court (Alvarez & Marsal) to manage the BTA Bank assets in a cross-border dispute. Courts have totally restored the corporate control over seaport Vitino and the subsidiaries, and invalidated the trust agreements preventing the client from using the port. In addition, the strategy has been developed and implemented to get back the assets that had been fraudulently channelled off the companies.
  • Representing the interests of major pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis and Bayer Healthcare, in litigation with a Russian company that registered generic drugs and tried to bring them to the Russian market before the expiration of our clients’ patents, as well as in disputes over compulsory license issuance for original drugs.
  • Developing a concept to challenge a contract agreement and get back over EUR 39m wrongfully obtained by a foreign contractor engaged for the Olympic Facilities construction, as well as to deal with the contractor’s counter-claims amounting to over RUB 1.2bn. The dispute has been settled out of court.
  • Defending TogliattiAzot in a many-year corporate takeover of the company. The Firm has managed to prevent many-million losses with the client in a dispute to review the court order denying vindication of a large stake in the company (4.4%) worth over RUB 1bn upon new grounds, as well as to defend the company in a corporate dispute over recovery of dividends on shares in the company amounting to about RUB 700m. 
  • Acting for an Armenia’s bank in bankruptcy proceedings, including advising the client on potential options to structure the debt recovery.
  • Acting for a large Moscow business center in the proceedings over an administrative suspension of activities due to a fire safety breach, and namely developing of the client defense strategy, issuing of expert opinions and providing evidence proving there had been no breach or threat to public health or safety.
  • Developing and implementing of a concept to get back the Latvian largest bank’s investment in Russian oil&gas companies exceeding USD 100m, of which to get back the tunnelled assets, to act in an arbitration court and to counsel on bankruptcy proceedings.
  • Acting for a shareholder of Russia’s largest mechanical engineering group as related to prevention of a potential recovery of the debts exceeding USD 85m from the group.
  • Advising an investment company as related to an international dispute out of a termination of the purchase of a share in a foreign car manufacturer.
  • Advising on and issuing of an opinion on the legitimacy of the current FIDE governing bodies as required for the proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, as well as acting as an expert in the legal proceedings. Following the hearing, the claim of the client’s opponent was dismissed.

Vera Rikhterman has authored several practical jurisprudence educational courses (at the Moscow State University, the National Research University – the Higher School of Economics, the Moscow State Law University), as well as numerous pieces in the leading popular science magazines.

In 2006, Vera graduated from the Moscow State Legal Academy with honors, and in 2008, from the Economic Faculty of the Moscow Aviation Institute. She defended her PhD thesis on the Legal Regulation of Judicial Restructuring of Joint-Stock Companies at the All-Russian State Tax Academy with the Russian Ministry of Finance (2010).

Vera has been admitted to the Moscow Bar Association since 2008.
