2nd Annual Conference on Risks in Marine Insurance: Best Practices, Russian and International Experiences

EPAM and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation with the support of Maritime Arbitration Commission at the RF CCI invite to attend the 2nd Annual Conference on Risks in Maritime Insurance: Best Practices, Russian and International Experiences, which is to be held online on March 31, 2021 from 11 am till 1 pm (Moscow time).

The notable increase in crew claims in terms of the number and the amounts, evolution of the quarantine costs from a “nominal” to quite a significant risk, introduction of various “coronavirus” clauses, and the online loss settlement practice are the key trends in the Covid year, which turned the world upside down. Application of the Maritime Labour Convention remains tricky due to the ambiguous wording and lack of case law. There have been interesting indemnity cases relating to the damage to vessels.

How should the operations of insurance and shipping companies be structured in the new Covid reality the world is to be facing for a few years? What are the specifics of application of the Maritime Labour Convention and what details one should know to protect their interests? May the value of salvage material sold for scrap be “set off” as damages? International marine insurance experts, attorneys, representatives of English P&I Clubs, insurance companies, and ship owners are to address those matters.

The conference is open to the representatives of major companies: shipowners, ports, shipbuilding companies, insurance and leasing companies.

Topics for discussion*:

  • Unavailability of crew rotation and safety of navigation: what should be taken into account in risk insurance?
  • Insurance of quarantine costs: is there a way to set “boundaries”?
  • Clauses and new terms in insurance agreements in view of potential pandemics: the UK experience
  • Online loss settlement practice
  • What shall be treated as an insured loss and occurrence thereof under the Convention and as per a certificate / policy issued to the assured?
  • Shall the procedure for handling of complaints onboard to establish “abandonment of sailors”, pay salaries and repatriate, be mandatory?
  • Does the Convention deal with competition between (concurrent operation in case of loss occurrence of) certificates / insurance policies issued by various insurance companies?
  • Case Study. “Old for new”: may the value of salvage material sold for scrap be “set off” as damages?
  • Is it possible to get insurance costs for the crew maintenace in connection with the emergency repair of the vessel?
